THE NVIDIA® CHAMPIONSHIPS AT QUAKECON 2005
TOURNAMENT LINE UP INCLUDES A LITTLE OLD SCHOOL, A LITTLE NEW SCHOOL, AND $150,000 IN CASH
Mesquite, TX - June 10, 2005 - The NVIDIA Championships at QuakeCon will take on a slightly different flavor in 2005, with new tournaments for gamers to show off their skills as part the 10th annual QuakeCon, the largest four day gaming festival in North America. The Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas will be ground zero for more than 6,000 rabid gamers, all with the chance to compete for $150,000 in cash courtesy of title sponsor NVIDIA, the worldwide leader in graphics processing.
"QuakeCon is the ultimate event that celebrates PC gaming - community, teamwork, and the interest in enjoying interactive entertainment, and the desire to get the most out of today's technology," said Bill Rehbock, director of developer relations, NVIDIA. "We are proud to sponsor the 10th annual QuakeCon again this year, powering all of the tournaments and exciting action that thousands of gamers and PC enthusiasts will enjoy."
In addition to big-dollar tournament action, QuakeCon offers attendees four days of non-stop activity, including: a BYOC (Bring Your Own Computer) LAN party for more than 3,000 players, keynotes and workshops with technology and game industry leaders, the latest games and hardware on display in the exhibit hall and first-class parties and entertainment.
"NVIDIA's incredible support, the return of a tournament classic with QUAKE II, and an official $30,000 all-female championship is an unbeatable combination guaranteed to get the fans fired up for QuakeCon 2005," said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. "With $150,000 of NVIDIA prize money on the line, this year's competition will be extraordinary."
Here's the tournament line up for 2005:
DOOM 3® Deathmatch Championship
With the first appearance of DOOM 3 at QuakeCon 2004, last year's tournament was wide open; none of the competitors had an opportunity to practice or learn the subtleties of the game. Now, players have had a full year to hone their skills and put them to the test in a 1-on-1 battle for $50,000 in cash. Visit the QuakeCon Web site, www.quakecon.org for details on tournament rules and prize money distribution.
Inaugural QUAKE III Arena® Ms. QuakeCon Championship
For the first time, QuakeCon will feature an all-female QUAKE III Arena Deathmatch tournament where some of the baddest female gamers will test their mettle in head-to-head combat for bragging rights and $30,000 in prize money. Visit the QuakeCon Web site, www.quakecon.org for registration and details on tournament rules and prize money distribution.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy TerritoryTM Championship
This 6-on-6 team competition will be the ultimate test of battlefield tactics, communication and teamwork. Online qualification rounds begin on Sunday June 19, and the top 16 teams will compete in a double elimination tournament at QuakeCon 2005 for their share of $50,000 in cash. For official tournament rules and prize money distribution, teams can visit www.quakecon.org.
QUAKE II® Retro-Deathmatch Championship
For many hardcore gamers, QUAKE II is the game that sharpened their multiplayer skills to a razor's edge. At the NVIDIA Championships at QuakeCon 2005, 128 players will frag, talk trash, and frag some more, fighting for a share of $20,000 in prize money. For official tournament rules and prize money distribution, teams can visit www.quakecon.org.
About QuakeCon:
Often described as the "Woodstock of Gaming," QuakeCon was created in August of 1996 by a group of friends on the IRC network's EFnet who had a desire to meet in person. Less than 100 attendees gathered at the Best Western in Garland, Texas that first year to play and talk games and compete in the first QuakeCon tournament. id Software's lead programmer John Carmack and several other id team members stopped by to chat with fans about DOOM, QUAKE, and the future of an up-and-coming id Software.
Going into its 10th year, QuakeCon remains true to its original mission as an event created by gamers, for gamers. Sponsored by id Software and other industry-leading software and hardware manufacturers, QuakeCon continues to be run by a dedicated group of 30 year-round volunteers and more than 200 on-site volunteers. Nearly 6,000 people attended QuakeCon in 2004, and the event has expanded to include QUAKE®, QUAKE II®, Quake III Team ArenaTM, Return to Castle Wolfenstein®, and DOOM 3TM.
